Maybelline Queen

What exactly is the difference between cotton rounds, squares and balls? They’re all made from cotton and do the same thing, right? I use cotton balls and pads to take nail polish off, cleanse, and apply toner to my skin but I’ve never thought about which kind of cotton would be better for certain beauty routines.

  • Cotton Rounds are often hypoallergenic, as well as ultra-soft, lint-free and quilted for strength and durability. Therefore, they are made especially for both the application of toners, astringents and lotion, and the removal of nail polish, eye makeup, lipstick and foundation. Some brands also offer exfoliating cotton rounds, which maintain a micro-head exfoliating surface for extra deep cleansing, in addition to the same application and removal uses as standard cotton rounds.

  • Cotton Squares are the ideal solution for manis and pedis. Their super-soft surface is lint-free for high-shine buffing, and is great for applying cuticle cream and for removing multiple layers of nail polish. Like cotton rounds, brands may offer exfoliating cotton squares, which add the feature of exfoliating micro beads to remove stubborn glitter or dark nail polish.

  • Cotton Balls, like any and all cotton products, may be used with your favorite cleansers, astringents, and toners. They are best used for applying oil, lotion or powder.

Besides brushes, there are a few other tools that every artist needs to carry with them. These are tools that allow you to prepare and perfect every makeup application including tweezers, spatulas, curlers, and on-set disposables—all of which are crucial to your artistry. Most of these items are available at drugstores, makeup boutiques and online. Here are some of my favorite essential tools and disposables.

Wedge Sponges

While I am not a fan of applying makeup with a sponge, I do love a wedge sponge for erasing mistakes, buffing out edges or blending down makeup. My favorite is the Alcone Non-Latex Wedge. The softer non-latex material leaves no lines behind when you are working.

Disposable Mascara Wands

You can avoid contamination and danger of infection by using disposable wands to layer mascara on your client’s lashes. A great pro tip: Since we buy and love most mascaras because of the wand, you might want to save your applicators from your mascaras when you throw out the tube. You can clean and disinfect them after each use in place of your disposables.

Powder Puffs

Powder puffs work with powder, help absorb oils, and create a shine-free, poreless looking finish. These are great for setting makeup and can help with keeping your hands off your client’s face, breaking down your makeup application.

Cotton Pad and Cotton Swabs

These items are inexpensive and great to have on set for blending, shaping, or removing makeup for quick changes or to clean a face.

Slant Tweezers

For easy clean up of a brow or the application of a faux lash, these tweezers work wonders. Their slanted tip offers precision, making them great for removing unwanted hair on the lip or anywhere on the face. Like brushes, they are available in many price points.

Eyelash Curlers

This tool is an easy way to open up the eyes and make them appear brighter and wider. Every artist has their preference with lash curlers.

Metal Spatula

Keeping your kit hygienic requires a steadfast commitment to refrain from double dipping your brushes, thus contaminating your product. A spatula can help you remove what you are working with from its container. Then, you can place it onto a palette and have fresh, unpolluted product at the ready.

Mixing Palette

For mixing and custom matching as well as for health and safety precautions, a mixing palette is an invaluable tool.

Safety Scissors

For lashes or any other cutting that comes up, these can be an on-set lifesaver.

Kerry Washington and her husband, Nnamdi Asomugha, are expecting their first child, according to Us Weekly. The “Scandal” star, who got married very quietly last June, is about four months along.

She seems to have been keeping it under wraps by concealing any signs of pregnancy with “roomy dresses.” Chances are, the notoriously private actress won’t admit she’s pregnant until her child is going off to college (kidding!), but we will have to see when she let’s the world know.

“I’ve had earlier times in my career when I did talk about it [my marriage],” she explained. “But I couldn’t just turn around and say, ‘I only want to talk about the good stuff, but not the bad stuff.’ So I just thought, ‘Okay, no more.’”

We’ll see how her pregnancy affects the latest season of “Scandal.” Congrats to the couple!

No one can ever say Janelle Monae doesn’t know how to demand the stage or give a stellar performance!

The songstress made her “Saturday Night Live” debut on last night’s episode and showed the world why she was recently named Billboard’s Rising Star. With a two-set performance of  ”Dance Apocalyptic” and “Electric Lady,” the 27-year-old starlet rocked her signature black-and-white ensemble and danced her socks off.

With no storage of energy, Janelle even wowed the audience with a funky moonwalk while holding on to the microphone stand!

The soul singer’s sophomore album The Electric Lady, which dropped last month, peaked at No. 5 on the Billboard 200 charts. With superb reviews, we’re glad to see the R&B game changer finally getting the recognition she deserves.

Check out the live SNL performances below and tell us what you think!
